Tell vs. Say

Hi guys! I'm sure that you have ever heard these words, which are often confused.
Do you know what the difference between them is❓ If you don't know it, read the following conversations and try to guess. Good luck🍀.

Elizabeth: Excuse me, miss. Can you tell me what time that 🎬 starts
Usherette: Yes, it starts at 7 o'clock.
Elizabeth: Thanks.

💬
Margaret: Excuse me, do you know what time the 🎬 starts❓
Elizabeth: Yes. The usherette said that the 🎬 started at 7 o'clock.
Margaret: Many thanks.


Did you guess the defference between these verbs❓ Well; if you are 😕, don´t 😟 don´t 😢. Let´s see their uses😉.

Telll
Usually used when somebody is giving facts or information..
      Can you tell me what time  starts?.
                      tell (sb) sth 
There are some expressions often used with tell.
tell a joke                 tell a story                 tell the time
tell a (white) lie                tell the truth    
*These expressions are used without a personal object.

Say
This verb is often used when you are giving somebody's exact words..
      'The film starts starts at 7 o'clock', said the usherette.
                                                                      say

This verb is used when somebody is giving facts or information to someboby else..
       The usherette said to Elizabeth that the film started at 7 o'clock.
                                 say to (sb) sth
Say can also be used with a clause when the person the subject are talking to is not mentioned.
       The usherette said that the film started at 7 o'clock.
                                 say (clause)
Remember❗
When you give information to somebody, you tell somebody something or say to somebody something .
When you tell a joke, a story, the time, a lie or the truth, you mustn't use a personal object after tell.
Use say with a clause in case the person the subject are talking to is not mentioned.
